We depend on the kindness and generosity of our volunteers and donors to keep Canessa running. Over the years, Canessa has provided exposure for thousands of artists -- many of whom are well known, but many, many others who are just starting out. Artists who have recently exhibited their work include Kathy Park and Henry Wolbert, Margo Bors, Anne Dowie, Jimo Perini and Chico McMurtry.

We Need Volunteers

For 30 years, the Canessa Gallery has been a solely volunteer operation. We have no employees. We give 12 shows a year and scrape by a penny at a time. Volunteers who share their time and energy with us are simply invaluable.

Our volunteers meet and mix with intelligent, intriguing people and are exposed to all sorts of art -- from sculpture and photography to watercolor and performance art. There's also the opportunity to learn a variety of new skills. We're willing to tailor the job to suit our volunteers' interests -- whether that's helping publicize upcoming shows in the local media, assisting with our monthly mailings, soliciting donors, writing grants, hanging shows or something else. We only ask that our volunteers have a passion for art, a respect for artists and a willingness to do whatever necessary to assist us in making Canessa a magical place for artists and visitors alike.

Friends of Canessa

After six years of wrangling with the IRS and a seemingly endless stream of paperwork, Canessa now has permanent 501c3 non-profit status. (Thank you, thank you, thank you Alissa Schoenfeld!)

We also have a 2-for-1 matching grant. Your $10 to help cover our monthly mailing puts $20 in the bank. Any donation you make to Canessa is tax deductible.

There are no paid workers at Canessa -- only volunteers -- and in 30 years, we've put on close to 400 shows and events. Over the years, our purpose has never changed. We remain committed to helping artists who want to be artists for their lifetime.
